The first Modern Rock chart was published on 9/10/1988, and was 30 positions. On the date of 9/10/1994, the chart expanded to 40 positions, where it has remained since. Starting on (I think) 5/7/1994, songs older than 26 weeks and below # 20 were removed from the chart. This rule remained in place until 12/3/2005, when the rule was changed to songs older than 20 weeks and below # 20, as well as songs older than 52 weeks and below # 10. On 6/20/2009, the chart was renamed from Modern Rock to Alternative. Songs are not added to the database until they have fallen off the chart.
